Karachi hosts most of Pakistan's WHO-prequalified and DRAP-licensed pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity: GSK, Searle, Getz Pharma, Sanofi, Highnoon (Lahore-HQ but Karachi capacity), Hilton Pharma, Bosch Pharmaceuticals, Martin Dow. Each runs a purified-water (PW) loop, and the larger sterile-injectable sites run a water-for-injection (WFI) loop on top.
PW and WFI loops both start with a multi-stage RO. Karachi raw-water profile (KWSB-supplied or tubewell-fed, with TDS commonly 600–1,400 ppm and silica 15–25 ppm) means antiscalant choice on the lead RO is not optional. Membrane fouling on a pharma RO is a documented deviation; every cleaning cycle is a CAPA exercise.
Phosphonate antiscalants are the standard choice for pharma RO because the dosing chemistry is well-understood and the regulatory documentation pack (CoA, SDS, food-and-drug-grade certifications, REACH, certificate of suitability) can be furnished cleanly. UN-307 phosphonate antiscalant: organic-phosphonic blend, active 40–50%, density 1.20 g/cm³, pH 2.0–4.0. Inhibits CaCO₃, CaSO₄, BaSO₄, SrSO₄, silica, and iron scales by threshold inhibition + crystal modification + dispersion. Compatible with all polyamide membranes (CPA, ESPA, TFC, BWRO, SWRO). Documentation pack: CoA per batch, SDS, REACH summary, food-contact-pretreatment cleared.
- Stage: dosed continuously into the RO feed line, downstream of any softening + cartridge filtration + dechlorination skid.
- Function: keeps the calcium / sulphate / silica / iron in solution past their thermodynamic precipitation limits across the recovery sweep. Lets the lead RO run at 75–80% recovery without scaling.
- Dose range: 2–5 ppm, calculated against the feedwater LSI / S&DSI / silica × recovery. We send the dose calc with the CoA on every order.
- Monitoring: monthly normalised differential pressure, normalised salt rejection, normalised permeate flow. Pharma sites tie these into their water-system periodic review.
- Documentation: every shipment lands with batch CoA + SDS + REACH summary. Audit-ready against DRAP and WHO PQ requirements.
